Super 6s Final
Wimbledon Men finish as National Indoor Runners-Up
Wimbledon Hockey Club Men capped off an excellent indoor season by finishing as national runners up in the Super 6s Finals Day in Derby. After a strong Premier Division campaign and an impressive run through the biggest moments of the indoor calendar, the side closed the season with silver medals and plenty to be proud of.
Having secured third place in the Men’s Premier Division with important victories against Sevenoaks, Holcombe and East Grinstead, Wimbledon put themselves in a strong position heading into the finals weekend. Across the league phase, the group showed real consistency, quality and resilience, competing against some of the best indoor sides in the country and earning their place amongst the top teams once again. Every result mattered, and Wimbledon’s ability to deliver in key moments ensured they arrived at Finals Day with real momentum behind them.
That momentum continued in the semi final, where Wimbledon produced one of their standout performances of the season to defeat Surbiton 6 to 3 and book their place in the national final. It was a display full of intensity, composure and attacking quality, with the team rising to the occasion when it mattered most. Against top level opposition, Wimbledon showed exactly why they had been one of the strongest teams throughout the indoor campaign, combining sharp attacking play with the discipline and work rate needed to succeed on the national stage.
Awaiting them in the final were Old Georgians, setting up a fitting conclusion to the competition between two of the country’s top indoor sides. What followed was a thrilling and dramatic contest, with neither team able to be separated in normal time as the match finished 5 to 5. Wimbledon matched their opponents throughout, showing great character and determination in a final that demanded everything physically, technically and mentally. Although Old Georgians ultimately edged the shootout, Wimbledon’s performance in the final underlined the quality of the squad and the level they were able to reach across the season.
To finish as national runners up was a superb achievement and a reflection of the hard work put in by the group over the course of the indoor season. Reaching the final of a competition of this level is no small feat, and the journey there was built on strong performances, big results and a clear sense of togetherness throughout the squad. From the Premier Division through to Finals Day, Wimbledon consistently showed that they could compete with the very best.
The campaign also showcased the group’s depth and character. Indoor hockey demands quick decisions, technical sharpness and relentless energy, and Wimbledon delivered all three across the season. Whether in the league phase or under the pressure of knockout hockey, the side continued to show the qualities that have made them one of the country’s strongest indoor teams.
While the final result may not have gone Wimbledon’s way, there is no doubt that the season as a whole represents a major success. A third place finish in the Men’s Premier Division, a superb semi final victory, and a place in the national final together make for an outstanding body of work. The squad can look back on the campaign with real pride, having once again represented the club at the highest level and finished the season with national silver.
Wimbledon’s run to the final was a testament to the standard, ambition and character within the group, and it provided another memorable chapter in the club’s indoor story. Finishing as national runners up is an achievement that reflects not only the quality within the team, but also the consistency and belief they carried throughout the season.
